The Cyrus News Agency reports that a blogger in Iran received a 3-year suspended sentence for blogging political opinions contrary to the current Iranian administration.

Journalist and blogger Ahmad Reza Shiri will have a permanent threat hanging over him as a result of the suspended sentence of three years in prison handed down by a court in the northern city of Mashad on 8 January, Reporters Without Borders said today. He was reportedly accused of writing articles in his blog calling for a boycott of last February’s legislative elections.

“Suspended sentences are often used to silence journalists who bother the authorities,” the press freedom organisation said. “The fact that this type of sentence has now been applied to a blogger shows the importance that weblogs have assumed in Iranian society.”

Our best hope for Iran to emerge from this nuclear controversy and idiotic threats against Israel and the UN is for the Iranian people to lead the fight politically.  Iran needs more outspoken people and bloggers like Ahmad Reza Shiri.  Freedom in Iran, hopefully it's just a matter of time.  And hopefully it will happen without the nuclear fallout.

Continuing on his fast-track through diplomacy, Iran is giving the U.N. Security Council ultimatums.

Iran will immediately retaliate if referred to the U.N. Security Council next week by forging ahead with developing a full-scale uranium enrichment program, a senior envoy said Monday.

The comments by Ali Asghar Soltaniyeh, a senior envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency, reflected Iran's defiance in the face of growing international pressure over its nuclear program.

Iran: No UN Referral or Else We'll Keep Doing What We're Doing.

Any rationally thinking person would acknowledge that this means Iran has rejected all peaceful means of halting its nuclear program.

Iran’s top nuclear official on Sunday warned Tehran would resume efforts to enrich uranium on an industrial scale if its case was reported to the UN Security Council, further raising the stakes in the crisis over its nuclear programme.
The ramifications of taking out Iran's nuclear program by force would be painful in the near term, but the ramifications of not taking out Iran's nuclear program would be utterly catastrophic in the medium- and long-term.
